Weekly Spellings are provided each Friday, applied in spelling lessons and tested the following Friday.
P.E kits should be worn to school on your child's allocated days, our sessions are on Mondays and Thursdays.
Reading Books should be in school each day and will be changed each Monday. Further guidance is below.
Curriculum Information:

Reading Year 1: In reading, we’ll be looking to develop our segmenting and blending skills. In year 1 we will work lots on our fluency and begin to use expression. As well as thinking about reading comprehension. Year 2: In reading, we’ll begin to use expression and how the author uses punctuation. Comprehension takes a greater focus in Year 2 and we’ll be working to develop our skills in answering questions and talking confidently about what we have read. Reading books will be sent home next week. They should be in school each day and will be changed each Monday. Further guidance will be sent home with your child’s reading book. |
Writing New spellings will be sent home every Friday. Year 1: We’ll be using our phonics knowledge to help us to write simple captions, words and phrases. Letter formation will be practised daily. Year 2: We’ll be practising saying sentences aloud and ensuring they make sense before writing them down. Correct use of capital letters and full stops will be a focus and we’ll also be working hard on correct letter formation and sizing. |
Maths Year 1: We’ll be developing our understanding of numbers to 30 and simple addition and subtraction. Year 2: We’ll start by looking at place value (tens and ones) before moving on to strategies for addition and subtraction. We’ll speed up our recall of number bonds to 10 and 20 and practise counting in jumps of 2,5 and 10. |

R.E In Religious Education we are thinking about God’s Great Plan and the stories of creation. As part of our Catholic Character Education we will learn about the virtues of and across the half term: |

Science We will be learning all about materials and their characteristics. |

Wider Curriculum: History: We will be learning about Great Explorers from the past and how exploration has changed. D&T: We will be learning about structures and designing and making a new chair for Baby Bear. Jigsaw / PSHE: Our Jigsaw unit this half term is ‘Being Me in My World’, we will talk about who is special to us. Computing: We will be learning about Information Technology Around Us. Music: We will be exploring rhythm in our topic Hands, Feet and Heart. PE: We will be practising Yoga and how it can help our mind and body. Pupils should come to school in their PE kits on PE days. |
KS1 Reading September 2024
Reading is a very important part of the curriculum. At St Joseph’s all children from Reception through to Year 6 read daily. During this time children take part in different reading activities. These activities include reading decodable books (that can be sounded out), comprehension and questioning of text, and reading for pleasure. Each week your child will bring home a new reading book.
Each child has received their ‘reading pack’ (book, named plastic wallet and reading diary). Please help us to preserve and protect our lovely new books for others to enjoy by ensuring they are kept in the reading wallet provided. Please note that damaged or lost books will incur a £5 fee.
Your child’s reading practice book will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. All groups will read in school at least three times a week and we ask you to support your child’s reading journey by continuing their practice at home. If your child is reading their book with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy - your child needs to develop fluency and confidence. If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished the book, talk about the book together and use the prompts in the front/back of the book.
Reading diaries
After reading, please make a note in your child’s yellow reading diary. This helps us to see what your children have done, what they have enjoyed or what they might have struggled with. This diary will also be dated and initialled when children read with an adult in school. Therefore, ‘reading packs’ need to be in school every day.
